some truly heinous acts can be performed that will lower it.
The most interesting about it, however, is just how many truly horrendous things the game allows you to do the game is built with a karma system in the form of a spiritual barometer, and whilst performing acts of kindness and redemption lift this value. His feverish snarling interpretation of the infamous ‘HATE’ speech lends a lot of life to the game, and whilst other voice actors are considerably less convincing, his performance is an entertainment in itself. The single best thing about the game is, of course, it’s author Harlan Ellison who voices AM.

Whilst players are free to save at any time, dying in a scenario (and dying is quite possible through player stupidity) merely sends the character back to the selection screen from which the scenario can be begun anew.
The scenarios, having been created by a computer borne of nothing but hate are all nighmarish constructs that mock the human condition, and solutions to each of the scenarios can be abstract and difficult to deduce. The game uses a simplified version of the Lucasarts SCUMM interface which whittles the verbs down to a mere eight (as opposed to the original Maniac Mansion’s fifteen), and affords a mere eight slots for inventory.

The game plays out as a series of short-form point and click adventure scenarios, each centred around one of the five main characters. You see, even after hundreds of years of being tortured by AM Gorrister still blames himself for his wife’s descent into insanity, Ellen is still repressing the memories that gave her a fear of the colour yellow, Ted is paranoid that the rest of the group may discover his past as a confidence trickster, Benny committed atrocities against his own men during vietnam, and Nimdok… well, Nimdok was partially responsible for one of the worst crimes against humanity ever to happen. As the latest of his little schemes, he offers his captives the opportunity to play a game each of them will be thrown into a situation carefully tailored to both torment them about their current status and to remind them of their past indiscretions. Tortured and provoked for over a century, the final five members of the human race have been reduced to plaything for AM, an evil computer with a profound and all-encompassing hatred for humanity.
